Good to know
- Neosporin + Pain Relief is a different formula: the ointment adds pramoxine HCl (a pain reliever) and has more bacitracin (500 units) and polymyxin B (10,000 units) per gram, and the cream version has no bacitracin at all. Store-brand "Maximum Strength" and "Plus Pain Relief" antibiotics are likewise not the same as Original.
- Simply Neosporin and Polysporin contain only two antibiotics (bacitracin and polymyxin B) — no neomycin.
- The Neosporin Original carton states that its makers don't make store-brand products. Store brands come from other manufacturers but list the same three active ingredients at the same amounts per gram.
- First-aid antibiotic ointments are sold under the FDA's OTC monograph system, which sets the allowed ingredients and amounts for brand and store versions alike.
