Where to find it
Look for the “Pharmacy counter (Allergy & Sinus)” aisle sign. Sold from behind the pharmacy counter. Ask the pharmacist, show a government photo ID, and the purchase is logged. Federal law (the Combat Methamphetamine Epidemic Act) limits pseudoephedrine to 3.6 g per day and 9 g per 30 days, and some states are stricter.
Good to know
- Each Zyrtec-D tablet has half the cetirizine of a Zyrtec Allergy tablet (5 mg instead of 10 mg), plus 120 mg of extended-release pseudoephedrine.
- Zyrtec-D "Allergy & Sinus" and Zyrtec-D "Allergy Plus Congestion" boxes list the same 5 mg / 120 mg tablet.
- Decongestant products on the open shelf usually contain phenylephrine instead of pseudoephedrine. In 2023 an FDA advisory committee concluded that oral phenylephrine is not effective as a decongestant.
- Claritin-D and Allegra-D pair pseudoephedrine with loratadine or fexofenadine, so they are different combinations.
