Good to know
- Differin Gel 0.1% was prescription-only until 2016; its carton calls it the first FDA-approved over-the-counter topical retinoid for acne.
- Store-brand adapalene 0.1% gels are FDA-approved generics of Differin (approved through abbreviated new drug applications).
- Adapalene 0.3% gel (Differin 0.3%) is still prescription-only.
- Many other Differin-branded products — cleansers, BPO treatments, body washes — contain benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, not adapalene. Differin Epiduo adds benzoyl peroxide 2.5% to adapalene, so it's a different product too.
